In fact in one of the cases I recall there was associated oral apthae -
possibly primary HSV. Could your reference have been HSV rather than
Zoster.
Incidentally the only stuff I could find on Medline refers to CMV & rarely
Zoster in immunocompromised patients (HIV, leukaemia etc)
Gwen's suggestion is certainly sensible but I'm pretty sure I asked about
NSAIDs
and ruled them out. My best guess previously had been subclinical
oesophagitis, unmasked by not eating (viral pharyngitis/malaise) thus not
buffering the acid...
