In the end PCGs are incompatible with independent contractor status. The
further on GPs and others get with them, the more strains will appear
and ultimately they will cause a crisis. I don't know exactly what sort,
but crisis there will be. It might be over Ahmad style refuseniks, or
about underperforming practices or about clinical governance, but one
way or another it will come.
At that point either the whole thing will come crashing down, or general
practice will have to be nationalised! Yes - HMG will have to take over
our property, and make us salaried employees of the PCG. That's the only
way it can work and I believe that's what's coming. Truth to tell, if
the salary's OK (same as consultants at least) and we are adequately
compensated for our property I think I'd quite welcome it.
Cheers
Toby
