Is not the issue here fairly well debated? These guys kept on operating long
after it was clear that their performance was way below national averages.
Against this it is hard to sustain the 'caring' view, since most of the
outcomes were deaths. Would anyone on this list have carried on as long as
they did? I hope not. I tend to agree with Jeff's comment further up this
thread that the GMC pulled its punch. For various reasons, I have little
confidence in the GMC's ability to regulate the profession, which is a
worry, since they are virtually all that stands between us and *not* being a
profession (i.e not being self-governing.)
As for working under triple jeopardy... Well complaints are a pain, but
should be rare and are, if you look at the figures. Touching wood, in
sixteen years of practice, I have had to deal with one informal complaint,
never been sued, and never been before the GMC (-:
On the other hand, I can think of several professional colleagues who appear
to lead charmed lives.
