Hi John
>In that case, why not have a system where in any one year you pay no
more than £20, or another arbitrary figure, before subsidy kicks in?
Well there is but it the exemption certificate costs about 75 quid not 20.
Works out at about 1 script per month. Even better bargain as time goes by
as the cost has not gone up (in Scotland anyway) nearly as fast as the
prescription charge.
Since few asthmatics and only a small number of hypertensives are managed
on only one medication, it's well worth it for these folk. There is of
course no logic at all in the current exemption system, brought in in a
rush in the autumn of the year thr NHS was launched since prescribing was
going thru the roof. What WAS so expensive that you could prescribe in
1948???? ;-) Was this the first evidence of rationing in the NHS?
