I remember my second successful attempt in 1987 in Edinburgh, so much more
friendly than Princes Gate ;-) and a great Scottish breakfast at The Post
House in Corstorphine Rd. Went for a walk in the Zoological Gardens before the
exam. which helped me relax.
One examiner asked, would I allow a primigravida a home delivery? Then there
was a question about treating what at first sight seemed to be a simple sore
throat which turned into a patient dying from a ruptured carotid artery caused
by an abscess from a tonsillar infection! Everything went ok I think, until I
was asked to face the family who said I should have made the diagnosis
earlier. The examiner asked what would be the first thing I did on hearing
that the patient had died and I replied that I would contact my defence
society.
I think they wanted me to say that I would support the family, allow them to
vent their feelings and all that jazz but I completely forgot about that stuff
in the heat of the moment. Still passed though.
Finally there was a question concerning a patient in my log diary. Is this
still part of the exam? It centered on what evidence I had that treating Ca.
stomach earlier improved the prognosis.
Tips? Don't bullshit if you don't know. Be honest and admit it. Try not to
get out of your depth. You've got to be able to justify what you do and be
safe. If you can do that and keep your cool you'll pass.
All the best and good luck
