In the course of my job I get to see all types of practices. Practices
with just a GP and a receptionist through to practices with all manner
of attached/ancilliary/other staff. Last week I encountered my first
practice with it's own full time bouncer.
Reason? They run a drop in drug addiction counselling clinic and he's
often required to interpose himself between the addicts and the staff
in the name of safety. He's even instructed to interrupt every "drug
consultation" to make sure everything is OK. Needless to say, this act
in itself will often drum up business for him!
This unfortunate practice also has land at the back of the premises
which their neighbour (dodgy MOT/car repair merchant, done time for
GBH and arson) simply won't let them use as he prefers to park his
cars there. End of story.
Add these unusual environmental conditions to the normal stress and
pressure of general practice and you might think the GPs and staff
would be at the end of their tether. They weren't, they take it in
their stride and I left with a feeling of great admiration for them.
The feeling was rapidly forgotten as I witnessed a pimp loudly
abusing "his" prostitutes from the comfort of his 4WD Jeep.......
