I think it's sometimes forgotten that we have 2 masters, our
professional duties as doctors and our secondary duties as employees of
the NHS. These don't always seem to be compatible to me. Doctors are not
NHS any more than the politicians are.
Whatever cynical tricks the government get up to, if we can justify our
professional, medical practice then I don't think they will be ready to
but heads with their utilitarian approach if it is at odds - although it
would be great if they did - in public of course.
So I don't think it really matters how it's allocated, just keep on
spending according to peer-acceptable, medical decisions until they have
to come clean and s-p-e-l-l out what they are willing to afford on the
nation's health.
As the gov's employee I will personally work to clear rules but not when
they say one thing to us and another to the people who actually foot the
bill. The resources for health are not carved in stone but an arbitrary
figure set up by politicians who have to juggle vote-catching
priorities. And that is their job, not ours I think - let them juggle
some more.
