Press Release. For immediate release.
Brighton, Saturday 13 June 1998.
The 'British Family Doctors Association' declares the time has come for
family doctors to stand up for themselves.
Today, the 'British Family Doctors Association', formerly known as
'Doctors for Independence' met and issued a challenge to the
establishment and an appeal to grassroots GPs.
For the first time ever, an association is born to take care of family
doctors' interests and to remove that task from the British Medical
Association's General Medical Services Committee. The 'BFDA' aims to
achieve this by appealing directly to the coal face doctors.
'The British Family Doctors Association' objective is to represent the
interests of all family doctors through strong, vigorous and dynamic
leadership and true democracy for its members.
The 'BFDA' aims to preserve and enhance doctors' independence, oppose
the ruthless imposition of half baked reforms and improve the working
conditions and remuneration of family doctors.
The 'BFDA' is acutely conscious of the long list of sell outs the
profession has had to endure over the past few years. This list
includes the 1990 Contract, the out of hours settlement and the recent
ineffectual handling of the Primary care Groups disaster by the current
leadership. The 'BFDA' affirms its loss of confidence in the current
GP leadership.
The 'British Family Doctors Association' will endeavour to ensure the
best working conditions for British Family Doctors so that they can
provide the best health care to the British people.
Doctors' traditional values are under threat. Doctors' independence is
at risk. Doctors' morale and good will need to be restored.
If you believe in these values, if you are passionate about providing
the best for your patients, if you care about your income and working
conditions, come and join us.
The time has never been better for an Association of caring and
dedicated Family Doctors, built on timeless ethics, driven by its
courageous members and robust leadership to deliver what is good for
patients, doctors and Britain.
