Nobody has yet mentioned the large number of symptoms/conditions which get
better and go away between referral and out patient appointment when the
waiting list is long. I could make a long list, for instance back pain,
glue ear, menstrual disturbances, skin rashes etc etc. The delay avoids
inappropriate investigation and treatment in many cases. Fits in with my
first law of general practice - keep your patient away from the hospital (
unless certain the hospital will benefit the patient )
