>From BBC News Web Site (extract):
"Dr Sandy Macara, the leader of the British Medical Association, heads a
long list of health professionals recognised in the Queen's Birthday
Honours list this year - the 50th anniversary of the NHS.
Dr Macara, who has been made a knight, led the opposition to the Tory
government reforms of the NHS that created an internal market and GP
fundholding.
A public health doctor from Bristol, he took over the chairmanship of
the BMA Council in 1993, deposing the incumbent, Dr Jeremy Lee-Potter,
who was widely criticised for failing to take a sufficiently strident
line against the internal market.
In contrast to his vehement opposition to Conservative policy, Dr Macara
warmly welcomed Labour's white paper on NHS reform on its release in
December. His enthusiasm, however, was not shared by many GPs who will
vote later this month on whether to take industrial action over plans to
establish primary care groups."
