Jeff is actually quite right. Phenergan is *no longer* indicated in "babies"
(defined as below 2 years in the data sheet) for anything - see any recent
data sheet. Prescribing it below age 2 years is therefore unlicensed. The
same also applies for Vallergan.
Now, we all know how good Phenergan is for all the problems previously
mentioned, including in babies. But antihistamines in general (not just
terfenadine) have been shown to have effects on the heart, and palpitations
are listed as a side effect in the data sheet for Phenergan. We also know
that cardiac arrhythmia may be one of the factors in cot death. I know of no
proof linking drugs like Phenergan with cot death, BUT if you put a baby on
it, did not tell the parents that it was not licensed for children under the
age of two years, and then the child had a cot death.... I think the MDU
would be likely to settle out of court :-(
