I wouldn't charge but then I'm relaxed today and feel that we should still
have some mutual benefits in working in the NHS. However I agree with you
about not prescribing drugs that you are not happy with. She should respect
that decision and get her consultant colleague to prescribe it if indicated.
If she was obviously unhappy with this I'd be rather sad that I'd said that
I'd do the letter for nothing.

Subject: letter liability
Graham and other learned folk on GPUK . Some advice please
I saw a 30 week gestation fit lady in her second so far uncomplicted
pregnancy today. She has just registered so no previous history available
except by chatting to her of course.
Didnt come for an antenatal but to request a letter of fitness to fly as she
is off to Canada at 31 weeks gestation and flying back at 32 weeks
gestation.
She is a doctor. (Anaestethics - SR (4th year))
I have agreed to do a letter and charged her £7.50 coz I'm in that sort of
mood today.
It is a general To whom it may concern... I see no reason as of todays date
why this lady should not persue her intended journey blah blah. Should I add
a disclaimer that I give no guarentees that an obstetric emergency will not
arise. I dont want the bill for a 747 redirection landibg on the practice
mat?
What are my liabilites in this area? Should I have refused to do one?
She also asked for Clexane (Heparin) to use prophylactically. I said I was
unprepared to prescribe as outside my level of experience , but prepared to
research and ask around and look for the evidence. She wasn't impressesed.
So any thoughts on that one... am I hopelessly out of date?
Oh of course I forgot to mention she flies on Thursday, so I have to do the
letter and "make my mind up quickly" [sic] So get cracking you guys/gals I'm
depending on you.
Off to a bad start with this one :(
Oh for the life of a hot knife in Buttersville eh?
