Adrian is in fact correct if he is talking about Microsoft Exchange
Server - which when talking to another MS Exchange server will use the
X.400 messaging protocol standard.
Thus is he wave a number of MS Exchange server supporting SMTP mail
linked together they will talk to each other using X.400.

SMTP servers goes as X400???
This is mis-information. X.400 will go the same way as
Betamax and OS2 (Both of which were superior technologies that got
overtaken) Later generations of Internet mail technologies will now
doubt draw on some of the good bits of X.400 but that's it.

Somebody stated that X400 is taking over
in the general use of e-mail
on the internet, and that in fact SMTP
servers pass mail between
themselves using X400, therefore it is
perfectly logical to use X400 in
the NHS Net.
Not a techie as far as I could see, and
it sounds a bit suspect to me.
I know about RFC 822 because the
messages bouncing keep referring to
it, but X400??
Can anyone authoritatively identify this
as mis/information?
