Subject: Sick notes
Two very difficult consultations with the same patient today (so much
for complaints about not enough appointments!) 40 minutes of my life
ruined!
She wanted a continuation sick note. But the Benefits Agency had
written and said that she was capable of work so I declined.
Immediate floods of tears. Like Pharoah my heart immediately hardened
and I continued to decline. She left with the tissues I had given
her. Returns in afternoon surgery saying that she had 'phoned the BA
who said I could give a sick note if I felt that she was incapable of
work. I showed her the letter - condition must have worsened or a new
condition had arisen. More tears, more tissues profered. "But I won't
get any money" she said. Desparately trying to control my temper
(which I did!) I continued to delcine saying that med3's were for
statutory sick pay only and that I am not the occupational health
doctor for her company so she should see them and I am not her bank
account (bit mean that one). She said, but he can't give me sick
note! So I said get him/her to write to me. She left crying
clutching the tissues.
I can feel a complaint coming on here:-( If the occ. health doctor
says she is unfit for work, doI have to give a private note or can I
say this is not my responsibility, he/she should give the sick note?
