I have every sympathy but it is Microsoft you should be ticked off by not
computers or computing. Having been 'in computing' for nearly 20 years I
learnt a long time back never to be in the forefront of software technology
*unless* you are prepared to be a software research establishment. Don't
swap a stable system for some so called extra bells and whistles if you use
it for something other than exploring computing. I'm sorry to give late
'advice' like this I feel really mean doing it but I've heard of so many
people having trouble with this and other MS products that I have to ask why
do we keep on putting up with it?
It seems that anybody who does get Office 98 working as they want it, or at
all, considers it to be a personal achievement. It seems to me it isn't, it
is sheer luck depending on how your machine is configured. Microsoft are
getting away with blue murder. I have come to the conclusion that they are
called Microsoft because we have to be 'a little soft, in the head to use it'.

Like you say but try uninstall via safe mode first then try the 95
re-install, no guarantees. Who knows, computing with Microsoft has become a
lottery. Sorry, Jel, do like me wait a year before you install anything you
don't have rock solid recommendation for.
