I hate to say this, but the last three PCs I have had  have only had one
serial port.
The reason for this is prolly the fact that mice now have their own ports,
and of course, USB, which no-one can use yet...

I have heard of one USB scanner, which isn't a flatbed. The bad news is that
Dixon's sell it - but I can't remember the model. I was looking to buy a USB
scanner myself, but couldn't find one, tried a parallel port scanner (which
hijacked my keyboard interrupt and turned out to be unusable, and eventually
bit the bullet and bought an HP scanjet 6100c, running off SCSI, which is
what I should have done in the first place.
