I think a lot depends on the location of the strike. I was running an old DEC
PDP11-34A years ago (about the size of a large refrigerator) when we had a
strike on the pole outside mounting the transformer. Melted the external
surge
protector, the internal surge protector and the better part of the 38 amp
power
supply. Left the bank of modems untouched - I have no idea why, since the
phone
lines came in off the same pole. I doubt a UPS would have done much to stop
a
strike of that proximity.
