So there I was sitting at my PC on a Monday evening as one does when
suddenly ZAAAPPPP!!!! Flash of lightning overhead, power out all along
our road (about four miles) and two sheep dead a mile away. Power restored
five hours later but PC dead likewise modem. Laptop and printer also
plugged in but OK and no trip switches etc gone in house. Curious! Local
repair man finally worked it out two days later when he found:
1. Blown motherboard but power supply OK in PC
2. Burn marks inside modem case and a few components looking like they had
exploded.
Lightning surge must have come down the phone line attached to the modem
but left the other line (our main home one) intact.
So lucky me that I wasn't holding the phone also attached to that line!
And even luckier because PC well insured so what was a Gateway 486/66 is
now being transmogrified into a 300Meg AMD K6 (or whatever they call it)
with 4.3gig HD. And a new 56.6 modem.
Doesn't the universe move in mysterious ways? I couldn't afford a new PC.
