Now here's an issue I feel passionately about. In 95 I spent six months
locuming in UK hospitals and was sickened by the way junior docs were
treated. In aus' it costs hospital admin a *lot* of money if they don't
keep their docs humanely rested - its amazing how creative management can
be for altering work practices when their budgets are hemorrhaging!
Its disgraceful the way the NHS takes what should be the nation's best and
brightest and most caring - and then ruthlessly wrings the last drop of
altruism out of them.
And I'm sorry guys, but IMHO its the seniors in the profession that should
be accepting responsibility. The attitude 'well I survived so they will
too' should be widely condemned.
The UK is not a third world country - why are doctors letting the NHS treat
other doctors as if it were? and I don't mean wring hands and saying 'ain't
it awful'.
Nothing will change until doctors threaten - and perhaps take - industrial
action. This requires professional unity and senior doctors standing behind
junior doctors. A good place to start would be a very clear message from
GPs to junior hospital doctors that you will support them (even if that is
only politically) should they take action.
