Of course, you should only refuse a request for antibiotics if it is
inappropriate.
Usually, this arises when patients with an obvious viral infection want
(understandably) something to make them better instantly.
I usually say something like
"Well, the good news is that this is nothing serious and you will get better
in the next 5 days ... , but the bad news is that there is nothing I can give
that will help. Paracetamol will make you feel better ... " etc
This is not hard to do, but does take more time than simply issuing a
prescription.
In the end it pays off. I very rarely see ordinary coughs and colds in
surgery.
