Today the Gardai (irish Police) went on strike. The Garda Representative
Body called on its members to ring in sick today and at least 50% have done
so. In many areas it is 100%. They are pissed off because there has been
no review of their pay structure since 1981, they want a 28% pay rise now
but the Govt has told them to get lost. So they have finally decided
enough is enough and are taking industrial action. The GRA has a range of
actions lined up including refusing to police public events,
non-cooperation with parking offences etc.
I believe this is the first major action by a group of front-line "public
servants" in these islands for many years. Perhaps an example to the rest
of us?
