Agree with that Mike, I am not saying that encryption is part of the NHS
net. However I would like an indication that clinical data on NSHnet or any
other wide area networks is encrypted.

Whether or not the data (of any sort) on the NHSNet is in clear or
encrypted, is NOT a function of the NHSNet. It is totally a funciton
of the applications that run in the systems that are connected to the
NHSNet. Of course the systems must agree as to what they are doing
(that is code for 'the people who design the systems must have agreed
what they are doing, and implemented them accordingly); but if the
two (or more) inter-communicating systems have been
designed/implemented to exchange data in clear, (or encrypted), then
the network had better just carry the traffic.
