Of course I am in Canada. I used to work in the States as well. Having
practised in both sides of the pond I am still amazed that the British
think their way is the best way. I would not send my worst enemy through
the trials of the NHS for treatment. In family practice in the UK, the
patients expect to have their bums wiped for them and the GP's are
spineless in fighting against it. House calls are mandatory and patients
are not encouraged to take any responsibility for their on health care.
Family Practice in UK is devastating as a career. Having done Family
Practice in North America, I am empowered to make choices that are
reasonable for my lifestyle, I chose the hours I work and I am able to
deliver higher quality health care.
Having trained in the UK. I did my residency in LA and found that it was
educational rather than service related, which it was in the UK.
Also, I found intense Racism in the UK- NHS, which I have yet to encounter
in the progression of my career so far in North Amercia. A lot of my
friends from medical school are here in North America. In fact the common
theme amongst the Asian Medical Students was you better do your exams for
North America because you are going to be some permanent SHO somewhere in
Burnley,Rochdale etc.
Anyway I will keep politics off the list but lets call it as it is rather
than dress it up.
