If I don't think they are indicated, I tell the patient so and mention the
diarrhoea, nausea, rashes, gut-rot and so on that you can get with them but
say that if they are still keen, I'll give them a script (all said with an
evil smile on my face :-) )
OR:
I tell them that the sore throat or whatever will probably settle without and
I'll give them a script with instructions to cash it if the complaint has not
resolved within so many days. Most of the scrips issued in these circumstances
don't get used.
OR:
I use the "If I were you, I wouldn't use them" approach which is often
surprisingly successful. A variant of that which also works is: "I had that
recently( the sore throat or cold or cough) and mine settled without taking
anything.
