I agree with both of you. Example:
I came into general practice in 1992, post-1990 contract and all. The
surgery was a hovel not fit enough to qualify for minor ops. Nevertheless,
I always felt that injecting a joint or taking out an easy lump was just
part of the job, so I went ahead and did them without the prescribed
payment.
The point is: why do we alwyas have to be bribed to do Good Things?
Things like preventive medicine and continuing education.
That last thing, continuing education is a disgrace. I always took the
view that no one will bribe me and tell me how and when I should educate
myself. As a result, I never go chasing brownie points in stupid
boring meetings. As a result, after 6 years in gp, I am still on
level 2 of the Post Grad Bribe!
Poor but intellectually free.
That brings me to another subject for a later e-mail. That of the
conflict between Pragmatism and Purity. Perhaps A. Wedgewwod Benn or
Dr. Faust might come to my aid ;-)
