Agree that it would legally (and ethically)be negligent, esp. if no
guidelines to staff when to stop.
I sometimes get irritated by staff asking about *everything* esp. when I
have written Rpt. xxx in the notes but not actually put it on the
computer.
I think it would be fair dos to allow 1 repeat after the allotted number
provided the pt. is told this was just to 'tide them over' till either
the doctor/nurse sees them or renews the repeat authorisation.
In a big practice, it is a good idea to put long-term repeats on..i.e.
3-5 years for long-term medication e.g. allopurinol, rather than
automatically going for 1 year.
