When I last worked it out for our practice, we were getting UKP 17 per hour,
taking into account out of hours etc, with average 65 hour week

Here are some figures from my last accounting year (96/97):
Total income from all NHS fees for all age groups = ukp 81,140.00
This excludes all reimbursements such as notional rent, staff etc.
Divide by a list of 2500, you get 'earnings/patient' = ukp 32.45/yr
For average consultation rates, this equals ukp 8.11/consultation
For the 'twenty timers', this works out at ukp 1.62/consultation
Happy me! Just look at my good fortune:
I get 24 hours continuous care and responsibility, I get sued at the
drop of a hat, I see 30 pathetic patients everyday, I employ staff, I
change light bulbs in my surgery, I clean the toilets, I shovel crap
by the container load from admins and ministers, I got me 'ole in the
'ed, I hardly ever see my family AND, the icing on the cake is that I
get paid this VAST sum of money of 8 pounds a consultation!!
What more can I ask for?
Ahmad
