Not an orthopod but I'll have a shot. No idea who Finkelstein was but
his test has nothing to do with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It's to test
for that other well known Irish(?) Orthopod(?) De Quervain's
tenosynovitis. It's a bit difficult to describe but basically you get
the patient to make a fist with their thumb wrapped inside their fingers
(following me?) and then you bend the hand down in a sort of ulnar
deviation direction while pressing over the thumb extensor tendon
(forget which one) at the end of the radius. Confused yet? It's
positive if they scream, hit the roof or you either then or when you
offer to stick a needle in it to inject same.
