<< It may make us unpopular with
Patients and Dentists but unless we refuse to do the work nothing will
change.>>
Absolutely!.. I read some tripe a year or two ago from some MDU or MPS
moron who said that GPs had to give emergency treatment to dental problems.
I took issue with that on the grounds that we don't have the training for
it; none of them are actually life-threatening emergencies anyway; finally
the moron said give analgesia etc at least. All very well but when you
don't know what you are dealing with is it wise to blast the patient with
some opiate and hope nothing bursts or goes septicaemic before they say
their dentist.
I am (it has been said!) a pretty good all-rounder; yet I had two awful
episodes of tooth/gum sepsis which I tried treating myself and failed
miserably. Had I gone to my dentist straight away instead of farting around
with stuff like Penicillin, Codeine (150mg in about 90 minutes---no effect
other than retching +++) I would have nearly instant relief.
So ever since my line has been call your dentist; if you're not registered
call your spouse's/parent's/significant other's dentist. Do not ask me to
treat something I am liable to make a mess of.
