<FURTHER ANECDOTE WARNING!>
A young woman of 23 who had not consulted any doctor since her pre-school
DTP booster (!) attended my surgery 8 months ago with a 36 hour history of
central abdominal pain, initially colicky but later constant, moving from
the periumbilical region and settling into the right iliac fossa. She was
admitted to hospital, observed for 48 hours, and the symptoms settled. She
had two more acute admissions in the next four months, told on each occasion
by the surgical registrar that she had irritable bowel and "an anxious
personality." When referred to a local surgical consultant, he felt her
right iliac fossa mass and arranged her immediate admission to remove her
gangrenous appendix and chronic appendix abscess. All symptoms now
abolished, she is very happy with NHS care but has a healthy disregard for
the abilities of junior hospital doctors, despite their white coats.

Best wishes,
John.
