What I like about the recent changes is the public acknowledgement by
the government about the need for rationing, and getting the best for
the limited resources in the NHS. Resources for the NHS always have
been limited and always will be, and our best chance of getting more is
to show what can be done with them.
As a member of a PCG, I won't "carry the can for inadequate funding" as
that can is carried by the taxpayer and his/her political
representatives. What I am prepared to do, with others, is to shape the
NHS in which I work to best meet the needs of the "NHS stakeholders".
The PCG seems to be developing into an organisation that is extremely
well placed to shape that NHS locally, and influence the framework
within which we do that shaping, so we have close links with LMC and
Health Authority to feed our requirements for framework regionally and
nationally.
Someone has to decide on priorities for the limited resources in each of
your areas. PCGs are giving you an opportunity to shape those
decisions. You do have a choice as to whether to be active in those
PCGs or not.
