I also work in Ophthalmology and remove FBs as Joe does but with a pair of
X4 operating glasses. The VAST majority do not penetrate but the only sure
way is to examine the patient with a slit lamp. If you can afford this at
your surgery then you are quids in. If you can also learn to use a 78D lens
with the microscope, then you are a fully fledged examiner and will hardly
need to refer any ophthalmic patients to the hospital except for surgery.
Welding is usually low speed and hence lower risk. The people who hammer
metal and get high speed splinters from it are at a higher risk.
