Dear GP-UK,
My understanding of what is happening in the US is that it is illegal to do
any human cloning or research of human clones *using federal money*, or to
be funded with any federal grants (such as the National Institute of
Health, etc.). Currently, I am only aware of one state (California) that
prohibits any human cloning within the state. The problem arises when a
very rich *private* individual wants to spend their money on making a
clone-- right now, there is nothing to stop them. However, the technical
difficulties at this stage are enormous using the human genome, and I also
understand that the doctor in Chicago that is offering to clone people is
actually a PhD physicist, and *not* a physician (MD or DO).
Hmmmm, considering very rich private individuals in my area of the country
(the Pacific Northwest) with megalomaniac tendencies, can you imagine lots
and lots of little Bill Gates running around???
