There are a number of major (NHS) projects looking at electronic
transmission of patient data (Tees & GPPL spring to mind). Some GP co-ops
are considering how to implement electronic messaging with GP practices &
there is certainly experience in the US of sending patient data
electronically.

Subject: use of email in general practice
I have just returned to the list after a long break.
I am getting involved with a pilot project to set up, and evaluate,
an email clinic between GPs and consultants (probably psychiiatrists)
for referrals / discussions over patient management / questions etc.
I have been staggered by the lack of published work on this. Whilst
many doctors now use email, are any / many using it for *clinical*
communication, rather than for discsuuion lists / education etc.
And why are so many conultants advertising email addresses? What are
these being used for?
