We were fed up with the number of "urgent" cases we were seeing at the end
of surgery. We blocked the last 3 appointments of every surgery and used
them for "same day" appointments. This has been a huge help. We have
monitored pressure on the routine appt. system and have not detected an
appreciable deterioration in availability.
The true need for appointments is quite low. Beyond this it seems that
increasing appointments simply increases workload. I have never seen any
studies looking at how wellbeing is affected by appointment availability.
