Thought the following might enable someone to reassure a post-op patient
with upset internal economy. It is well known that a major GA can knock one
a bit sideways for several weeks but perhaps less well known that it can
upset the internal economy for up to 8 weeks. It took 7 weeks for my guts to
settle back into the manner in which I am accustomed for them to function
after GA for a THR. I had asked a retired consultant physican, who had no
ideas on the subject, nor did his consultant anaesthetist daughter. Finally
I happened to be chatting with a g-enterologist and mentioned the matter to
him and he said this was very common, often referred to him, and now all he
does is say stick it out for up to 8 weeks and all will settle down.
Mechanism? No suggestions.
(If this is in the grandmother and eggs department, apologies, but as
mentioned, enquiry suggests it is not general knowledge.)

PS Having the other hip done soon, will be intrigued to see if history
repeats itself.
