But antibiotics have certainly taken some of the "colour" out of general
practice.... The cure for erysipelas:-
"Ample diet encouraged, and plenty of fluids given. Effervescent
alkaline compounds, such as Calomel or magnesium Sulphate by mouth,
Locally Lead and opium lotion, followed by strips of lint soaked in
mercuric solution (1 in 4000). Then paint 1/2 to one inch from
advancing edge with iodine tincture or siver nitrate solution 10
percent, and ichthyol ointment".
All this Hands on treatment beats the hell out of a prescription for
penicillin. The patient must have REALLY felt they were getting their
moneys worth
