No doubt this topic has come up before. One of the agencies that
consistently do not follow BMA recommended guidelines for medical
reports is the DVLA. Recently, they sent a rather detailed medical
questionaire for a patient of mine and said they will pay a derisory
£10.83 for it!!! We wrote back with a standard letter requesting for £25
for such a report. This is the photocopied reply who got back:
You have recently written to the Department about the fees and to say
that you are unable to provide us with information from this patient's
records. We will do our utmost to obtain the information from elsewhere,
but we will have no means of knowing whether the information is
complete. If a driving license is issued and you have any reason to
believe that your patient should not drive you should advise him or her
about this as part of your duty of cars and in the interests of raod
safety. The medical standards of fitness to drive are found in our
publication "At a glance".
I am sorry that the situation is thus and I hope it will be resolved
soon and to everyone's satisfaction.
Any comments?
