Hi all
I am running a two and a half day course PGEA 15 hrs at the Moller
Centre in Cambridge on the 26th 27th 28th March. Its a good interactive
programme attached as plain text (as people seem to have difficulty when
i just attatch them as Word 7). 15hrs PGEA applied for.
It is heavily subsides by EQUIP for North Essex GPS but so far we have
not enough applicants. So I'm opening it to all comers at £199 all
inclusive. So if you're short of points phone asap!

We have received notification form the Public Health Labs to be on the
lookout for more Pertussus, however we were not given any guidance on how
to test for it, what symptoms to look for etc. Can you provide some
guidance?

I believe notifications have shown a rise recentlly and it has been said
officially that this represents a cyclical peak.
This peak occurred after an interval of six rather than four years and is
small. Nevertheless I am sure there has
been a lot about over the last couple of years as I have made a special
study of it for 20 years in the Keyworth practice
and I saw about 50 cases in 1996 and about 30 in 1997 (pop 11,000).
My notification rate is currently 80 to 100 times the rate for England and
wales and I think the
reason is that at present most cases are missed. It is not too difficult
to diagnose if you suspect it
and know what to look for symptomwise but I know that it does NOT cause a
"dry hacking cough for weeks".
Incidentally, I have a documented series of about 600 cases of whooping
cough now and I am still
waiting to see my first subconj haemorrage from it! Another of life's
little mysteries.
So what are your diagnostic criteria for pertussis or do you do swabs on all
these patients. It sounds a bit like thoses parents who bring their kids in
with a non-specific viral rash and tell me the fruit of their loins has got
german measles for the 3rd time..
If the incidence really is that high it suggests that the vaccine isn't very
good and it could also be a nice little earner for notifying all thoses
infectious diseases.
