Dear all,
The proposed new body, the National Institute for Clinical Effectiveness
(NICE) is potentially very powerful and could influence every aspect of our
consultations with its views on good practice.
What are the chances that clinicians will control that group? What are the
chances in this primary care led NHS, that NICE will be chaired by general
practice?
If 'clinical governance' means anything it should mean that power in the
NHS is governed by clinical need as interpreted by coal face
practitioners. Isn't it about time we were a little more assertive and
began to claw back some professional autonomy?
The RCGP began as a passionate popular movement in general practice. As a
council member I declare a bias, but am I alone in thinking that general
practice should run NICE and that the RCGP should act as its chair?
These are my personal views, by the way.
