Good to see that not all UK GPs are stuffy
I introduce myself to every new patient with a handshake and something like
"Hi, I don't think we've met before, I'm John Marwick" Then most of them
give me their full name back and it's up to them whether they call me John
or doctor after that. Perhaps life is just different in the colonies.

Subject: Re: First Name Basis
I don't see what all the problem is. My patients call me by my first name
if they want. I suppose with a second name like mine it might be easier for
them
;-)
I tend to call them by their first name if I know them a bit. They then
object if I call them by their second name.
Maybe I'm a bit eccentric - I sometimes don't wear a tie (wow!) and never
war a suit (aargh!). I have plants in my room, smile and don't have any
"heartsink" patients.
I reckon it's all "state of mind". What I do not understand is why you all
seem to be getting so upset by a bit of friendly communication.
Maybe it means more than "the patient wants to get something (insidious)
out of you"...
Have donned asbestos suit in preparation for the flames - but will argue my
corner to the end!
