I have had a couple of patients recently who after one consulation
greet me with chirpy " Hiya Joe " The effect this has on me is to
become very suspect about the patient's mental health and secondly it
makes my skin crawl. I'm not sure why. Perhaps I'm a snob.
Perhaps it's because somebody whom I have hardly know decides to
unceremoniously ignore a degree which was hard comeby and patronise me
instead. >>
I quite agreee with you Joe, and I also find it annoying when they refer to
partners in the practice by first name terms, when you know only too well that
they don't know them from Adam. I wouldn't dream of addressing any other
professional by first-name terms, unless I knew them, or was invited to do so.
Friends in surgery are obviously different.
I believe that most of these characters are after one thing only, and that is
they feel they can manipulate you better if they call you by your first name.
I'm afraid that lack of respect these days has a lot to do with it as well -
20-30 years ago, it would have been 'Doctor' all of the time.
