We used to only write to women with abnormal or inadequate results. Recently,
in anticipation of the release of these guidlines, we have started writing to
notify women of normal results. I hope this will reduce the amount of time
our
receptionists spend answering phone queries and searching for results. >>
I agree with you Ruth, our practice also writes to all patients re their Smear
results, partly in the belief that it will reduce time as above, partly for
good PR, but also because it encourages them to come to us for further smears
and contraception.
We have done this for the last 6 years or so, and for the last couple of years
the letters have been produced from our EMIS system using Windows software I
produced to enter the relevant Read codes for targets etc, the letters being
produced as a 'by-product' . It therefore takes very little time, as
customised letters are automatically produced. I think it is very much a
matter of practice philosophy, although I can see the point about why it is
only Cervical Cytology results in the main that we tend to write about. One
could argue that it costs money, but I believe that we quickly recoup this.
