First names?
It can be a power game - as a female gp I find some midlle-aged males in
suits use my first name as a prelude to pushing me into doing what they
want -sign a certificate, give antibiotics, agree they are misunderstood
by wife and colleagues etc. (A note to my partners -it doesn't work so
don't try it!)
The older patients who seem to have an erroneous belief I have at some
point saved their life etc. seem to call me "Doctor Katie" - tolerable!
Children - here I may actually encourage first names, after all many
young children seem scared of doctors and it makes.me seem more normal
(to them)
Patients aren't the only ones - our staff call the 2 male partners
" Dr.... " even when addressing them directly, but the 3 female ones are
always referred to and addressed by their first names - sexist or what?!
Signed: a (disgruntled?) (female) Dr..., Katie to those who know me?
