I did an exchange 2 years ago and was refused funding for prolonged study
leave. To some extent I can see the logic if you continue to earn virtually
the same amount of money from your practice or from the Australian practice.
However I did feel that some help with travel might have been possible
(particularly as I have five children!) but the story was all or nothing.
I did get funding from the RCGP locally and nationally that I put towards
*some* of the travel costs but this did involve quite a formal application
with an academic slant and a write-up afterwards.

Regulations seem to have eased a bit since I did it (at least for UK GPs
working over there on an exchange).
Anyway, anyone who wants advice do contact me. Fantastic experience.
