I have had a couple of patients recently who after one consulation
greet me with chirpy " Hiya Joe " The effect this has on me is to
become very suspect about the patient's mental health and secondly it
makes my skin crawl. I'm not sure why. Perhaps I'm a snob.
Perhaps it's because somebody whom I have hardly know decides to
unceremoniously ignore a degree which was hard comeby and patronise me
instead. Maybe it's my imagination but I would think that the over
familiar buddy-buddy patient causes more grief. It does not bother me
so much if I am well acquinted with the patient.
Has anybody any thoughts on it?
Perhaps there is some study carried out in the BJGP on this very topic
in between the audit on methane gas levels in Irritable Bowel patients
and the study on the pounds per square inch pressure needed to apply a
stamp on an envelope.:)
