I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a child wrapped up in layer
upon layer of clothes with a red, sweaty, hot face who looked febrile but
actually had a normal axillary temp. when checked with my digital thermometer.
And if someone's been out in the cold and their forehead is cool, why should
putting a hand on the forehead be a reliable guide to whether they are
feverish or not?
What about if the examiner's hands are cool? Then all foreheads of afebrile
people will feel warm :-)
