It varies from one host to another.
I've had my own domain for over 4 years now.
Currently, I have 3 domains in my name and administer 9 others.
All this is hosted on a 150Mb disk space and I can set up unlimited pop
boxes, aliases and email forwards.
I adminster the lot online through a web site.
I am in the process of negotiating the price for all that. Previously,
the domain name/pop boxes on the virtual server cost about 30 pounds a
month for one domain and unlimited pointers + 6 email boxes with
Rapidsite (www.rapidsite.co.uk)
There are lots of deals about. For example, Netlink
(www.netlink.co.uk) will do the above for about 200 pounds a year.
Netbenefit (www.netbenefit.co.uk) have a bigger deal that costs a bit
more.
Remember, these outfits do not provide Internet access.
If my needs increase, the next logical step would be a server share
(where you take a share with other people on a server with dedictaed
connection).
There are software solutions where you can have your own host on your
local machine but you need an isdn line. Both of the above would work
out more expensive than a virtual server.
Remember too, that disk space these days is 10 pence a bucket. Those
ISP who make out to be doing you a favour of offering 5MB space are
puuling wool over your eyes (Free Online actually promise *unlimited*
free web space!).
You need to add to that the cost of registering the domain with Nominet
(UK) and InterNic (elsewhere).
This is what I put in the settings section of my email client:
pop server: mail.cybermedic.org
smtp server: anything you like (currently, I use smtp.freeserve.net) +
user id + password as normal.
It all depends on what you want to do.
Over the years, having my own domain and virtual server allowed me not
to be tied to any particular ISP. If the ISPs performance dips, I move
on and so on.
Let me know if you want to know more.
