As an excellent filler in the BMJ put it some time ago, haemoptysis
should be haemo-TIE-sis as in ptyalin etc. Also pointed out that
helicopter should equally be pronounced helico-pter. As I never tire of
pedantically pointing this out to people, not only am I a sad old git, I
am also now a fully paid up member of Pedants R'Us.
As for rosacea, should not the Latin master have pronounced it Roza-Kay?
And do you describe a chest as having rales, crepitations and rhonchi or
crackles and wheezes?
And apropos of not much else, what do people think of all these boring
modern brand names for drugs, all X's and Z's.
What about the good old-fashioned names like Sinequan and Cyclospasmol?
You take a Cyclospasmol and you know you're getting heap powerful
medicine, take a Xatral SR and it sounds like a spare part for a
Citroen.
