I heard on Radio 4 this morning that the Government task force on Y2000
is recommending that families should lay in supplies for a month to
guard against Y2000 problems..
I assume this is partly to guard against distribution problems as well
as production ones.
Has anyone considered such vital medical supplies as insulin?
There are a number of difficulties - and hoping to have deliveries next
week might well be too late.
1. Production - and supplies of raw materials and power to the producers
2. Ordering - how Y2000 are the local pharmacy's computerised ordering
systems?
3. Delivery of orders: what happens if there is a problem with transport
- as the Task Force appear to anticipate? There's already chaos if the
traffic lights don't function...
4. Storage if delivered
My gut reaction is to prescribe all patients on *vital* medication
sufficient for 3 months *before* 31.12.99 .... but if we all did that,
would the manufacturers be able to supply the demand... unless it was
planned?
Any ideas?
Mary
PS. Would a wine-cooler keep insulin at a safe temperature?
